Section: Why the DASH Diet?

The DASH Diet can make a big difference

Making a few simple changes one step at a time can lead you down a path of good health.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and American Heart Association recommend following the DASH eating plan because of the dramatic difference some simple changes can make.  The potential benefits of DASH have been compared to using one prescription medication to lower blood pressure.  Now that’s a good reason.

What’s more, the DASH diet has been called the diet for all diseases because it benefits everyone, not just those with high blood pressure.  The 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans encourage adopting DASH to promote optimal health and reduce the risk of developing other chronic diseases including diabetes, certain cancers, heart disease, osteoporosis, and obesity.
